Cave Run Symphony Finishes Comeback Season, Reorganizes Board
By Keith Kappes

The comeback season of the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra ended on a high note last week as the ensemble presented its fourth and final concert of the 2021-2022 season on April 24 and then reorganized its governing structure during its annual meeting on April 28.

The reorganization was necessary because of the coronavirus pandemic which forced cancellation of the final two concerts of the 2019-2020 season and the entire 2020-21 season.

This season’s final concert, themed “High Five”, included a tribute to the late Dr. Curt Hammond, former MSU professor, principal French horn and board member in the orchestra for seven years before his death in 2020. The music was selected by Dr. Hammond originally for a concert to have been held in May of 2020.

“We were pleased to recognize Dr. Hammond for his dedication to the CRSO and to meet our goal of sponsoring four high quality presentations of symphonic music this season after a two-year layoff,” said Dr. Craig Burrows, board chair. “We are indebted to those who bought tickets to attend our concerts, those who made gifts, those who served as sponsors, those who bought souvenir merchandise and program advertising and those who volunteered to help in other ways.”

Dr. Burrows, who served in an acting capacity this year, was among 11 persons named to the CRSO Board of Directors and he was with four officers elected for the 2022-2023 season at the group’s annual membership meeting.

Others in leadership are Dr. Mark Minor, vice chair; Monti Lloyd, secretary; and Dr. Thomas Pappas, treasurer.

Elected to three-year board terms were Burrows, Lloyd, Dr. Lori Baruth and Dr. Don Grant. Serving two-year terms will be Dr. Ewell Scott, Judy Yancy, Dr. Yvonne Baldwin, and Bill Shely. Named to one-year terms were Dr. Minor, Dr. Thomas Pappas, and Keith Kappes.

Three departing board members – Sharon Jackson, Clyde James and Lynne Pack – were thanked for their service.

The 55-piece orchestra is comprised of professional musicians, college music professors, and a select number of college music students selected through auditions.

Dr. Terry Durbin, CRSO principal conductor for the fourth season, returned to the podium for the season-ending concert.

Dr. Burrows said concert dates and times for next season will be Sunday, Sept. 25, at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, March 26, at 3 p.m., and Sunday, April 23, at 3 p.m. Concert themes will be announced later.
